It’s the leading fashion industry event in the Southwest and the most wonderful time of the year for Valley fashionistas — Phoenix Fashion Week, of course.
This year, the three-day event returns to the Talking Stick Resort from October 13th – 15th. Doors will open nightly at 5 p.m. for attendees to shop the style villa with some of the most prominent local boutiques and designers. Folks will also get the chance to find out who will win the coveted titles of “Designer of the Year” and “Model of the Year” 2016.
Phoenix Fashion Week’s mission is to bridge the gap between national and international designers and premier retailers and top fashion media. Its ultimate goal is to garner global exposure for Arizona’s fashion industry. Through educational fashion seminars, year-round fashion events, and charitable partnerships, Phoenix Fashion Week is gaining rapid acclaim for its community-service efforts and for infusing world-class innovation into the Southwest.

The ability to mesh parenting and fashion is a phenomenal feat – and that’s exactly what independent designers Joey and Amber Rodriguez did with their new children’s clothing brand, “Jumping JAAC,” entirely inspired by their own four kids.
Joey is better known as “Joey Boy” from 101.5FM’s show, “The Morning Mess.” He and his wife Amber decided to jump into the entrepreneurial world in March of this year and officially launch “Jumping JAAC.” They came up with the name by combining the first letters of their kids: Jo-Jo, Alina, Adrien and Cruz.
With the name of the brand down, it was time to start designing. Joey quickly discovered that the creative process would hit him anywhere and everywhere. He says he is constantly thinking of new designs. “It hits me in the shower, while I’m driving – the ideas just come to me,” he said.
Also during the creative process, they remained conscious on how to promote the brand and the price range they wanted to stay in. They decided to keep their items in the $20-dollar range, a price that would make it accessible for everyone.
In working with Amber, Joey recognizes that working together is a team effort and that his wife is also his business partner. They both bounce ideas off of each other, and sometimes they agree to disagree. This is where he says trust plays a part in their business relationship. They both understand that some of their designs will be a gamble; but nonetheless, it’s a learning experience.
Joey says the designs for “Jumping JAAC” are inspired by what is most popular in pop culture. For example, he says a shirt with the quote “all the way up” has become a favorite, along with a cupcake shirt with the saying, “it’s lit,” and last but not least a contemporary shirt with the hashtag “#mood.”
The versatility in some of their shirts is what makes their collection a huge success. “Jumping JAAC” is heading in the right direction with big names such as Baby Bash and Kid Ink already dressing their kids with their designs. There is no doubt that “Jumping JAAC” will become a household name quickly. Joey says the goal is to create a solid brand and expand into teen clothing.

Selena Quintanilla is now immortalized in wax at Madame Tussauds in Hollywood, California.
The Queen of Tejano Music now has her very own wax figure, unveiled this week by her family and former husband in front of a crowd of over 300 fans. The date of the event also marked the 21st anniversary of Selena’s fifth and final studio album, “Dreaming of You.”
The wax figure is dressed in signature Selena attire — a bedazzled bralette, high-waisted black pants, hoop earrings and bold red lips. The life-like figure is valued at approximately $350,000, and it took almost a year to create.
The costume in the wax figure is a recreated stage look from Selena’s concert at the Memorial Coliseum in Corpus Christi, Texas on February 7th, 1993.
Selena was killed at the age of 23 by one of her fan club employees, Yolanda Saldivar, in 1995.

“Fashion is what you’re offered four times a year by designers. And style is what you choose.” – Lauren Hutton
Phoenix Fashion Week has done it again. This season, the Chic Moxy Hotel in Tempe played host to the 2016 Shop Garment District. On August 5th, a crowd filled with fashionistas of every kind gathered for a preview of the emerging fashion and accessories from this year’s featured designers. The event gave an opportunity to independent sales reps, bloggers, boutique owners and target customers to shop right from the Shop Garment District before and after the show.
The opening fashion show was a nod to the 2016 Olympics — since the event fell on the same date as the Olympics Opening Ceremony in Rio. Phoenix Fashion Week showcased their newest collection styled in red, white and blue.
Every featured designer had the opportunity to showcase four pieces from their upcoming collections. This gave the audience a chance to see how the designer’s collections were all starting to come together. Personally, I’d say I already have my favorite designers and I’m eager to see their respective collections take shape.
For now, all that’s left is to see how these designers battle it out for the title of “Designer of the Year 2016” come October. It’ll be top models, top accessory and top fashion designers all under one roof.

READ MOREThis week’s skincare tip goes out to my Latina sisters who were “blessed” with oily skin like mine, or to anyone looking for a natural way to detox from deep-seated dirt or oil underneath their skin.
Turns out, one of the best ways to combat excess oil or dirt is to incorporate charcoal-based skincare products to your beauty routine to give your skin a fresh, clean feeling fast. Charcoal has special binding properties that help draw out toxins and bacteria that causes acne. It also cleans out all that gross stuff in your pores with continued use.
If your skin is not normally oily, it’s best to use charcoal products about twice a week because it does have a tendency to dry out skin.
There are many great charcoal skincare products on the market you can tailor to your beauty routine. Don’t limit yourself to just skincare, as there are many ways you can use charcoal to detox your entire body.
Below are a few of my favorite charcoal products I can’t live without and have proven to be very effective in keeping my oily skin under control. My acne breakouts are minimal now, and my pores appear smaller — not to mention my makeup lasts longer with fewer powdering sessions.
So with that in mind, feel free to do your research and find what works for you and give charcoal a try!
